Above is a photo from the 2000 summer graduating class of Camp
Telecom, a pilot summer technology program held at the University of
Massachusetts, Boston. I taught animation - Director in 1999 and Flash
in 2000. I taught high school students alongside their high school classroom
teachers. Below is an excerpt from a press release taken from the Massachusetts
Telecommunication Council web site.
Camp Telecom, a technology camp for high school sophomores and juniors, is a
partnership between the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council, UMass
Boston, the Metropolitan School to Career Partnership and Tech Boston. The
three-week summer camp provides technical training for high school students
and teachers through classroom and hands-on learning experiences. Students
and teachers rotate through modules that include Java programming, computer
animation and internetworking.
Camp Telecom is made possible by the sponsorship support of MTC member companies.
Students at Camp Telecom 2001 were each assigned a sponsor company and created
a web site which included research projects about their sponsors.
A special thanks to our sponsors for contributing to the success of Camp
Telecom 2001:
Acterna, Alpha Industries, Brooktrout Technology, C-Port Corporation, Deloitte
& Touche, Ellacoya Networks, Fidelity, Linx Communications, NMS Communications,
RSA Security, and Verizon
In addition to technical skills training, students and teachers gain a new
awareness of the telecommunications industry, increase their understanding
of emerging technologies, and learn about various types of IT careers and
the skills they require. Teachers bring this knowledge and information back
into their classroom to create ongoing projects utilizing knowledge gained
at Camp Telecom. Students enhance their technical skills, increase their
knowledge of the telecommunications industry, and have fun!
